About

Welcome to Koru Honu!

The Koru Honu is a traditional Māori symbol that depicts a sea turtle in the act of swimming, and symbolises travel and navigation as well as fertility, longevity, peacefulness and unity.

My name is Nicola Turner, and I am the founder of Koru Honu. I am currently pursuing a PhD in Earth and Environmental Science, with research focused on human impacts on Malaysian rivers and the development of strategies that balance community livelihoods with nature conservation. I hold a Master of Science in Environmental Science, specialising in Atmospheric Sciences, Climate and Ecosystems, and my thesis explored the influence of religion and religiosity on fertility and contraceptive use in Sub-Saharan Africa. I also have prior experience as an Environmental Consultant, bringing practical, real-world perspectives to my conservation work.

My passion and my goal in life is to heal our planet. Initially, I wanted to create a website, a platform I could use, to address all environmental issues affecting our planet, from climate change to animal cruelty to the various types of pollution, and propose solutions that mitigate the problems at the root. The shear breadth of problems was overwhelming; and for those of us who want to make a change in this world, the magnitude and number of environmental issues our planet is facing can “disable” us from achieving what we desire.

It was then I had an epiphany, to focus on sea turtles, a beautiful creature I have loved all my life (along with tortoises and terrapins) and address the environmental issues affecting sea turtles at the root. By addressing and mitigating the threats that affect sea turtles in fact covers a considerable proportion of global environmental problems, and puts into perspective the significance of a healthy planet for life on Earth. Seeing the population and quality of life of sea turtles, and their environment improve is motivation for me; knowing that my work has a significant and positive impact on their lives. The beauty of sea turtles and marine life is further inspiration.

While there are many organisations doing amazing and tireless work to support sea turtles, I believe more needs to be done to address the root of the problems so that efforts to improve sea turtle numbers and their quality of life do not remain an ongoing battle.

I aspire to use this platform to bring people together to work towards a healthy and respectful world so that all life on Earth can live together in peace and harmony.

On this webite, you can find detailed information about sea turtles, individual species, and the threats that they face. In the blog section, I regularly post about ongoing environmental issues facing sea turtles with specific cases from around the world, and what can be done to mitigate these problems so that we can rapidly move forward to undo the damages we have done to our planet, and so that sea turtles along with other beautiful marine and terrestrial creatures can live in peace without the ongoing threats posed by humans.

I am dedicating my life to helping sea turtles, and by supporting sea turtles, I strive to improve the health of our planet and the quality of life of all that live on it. It is all of our responsibility to look after and cherish our only planet we come from and share with all creatures big and small.
